THE 10 THUMBNAILS:
From the brainstorming parts of this assignment, we were required to create 10 designs and choose the 3 we liked best to turn into digital copies.
From the brainstorming parts of this assignment, we were required to create 10 designs and choose the 3 we liked best to turn into digital copies.
The 10 designs that were drawn up were inspired by the school' values, events and from the influence map created earlier.
From the 10 thumbnails, I am automatically eliminated designs number 3, 6 and 9. Although I liked the idea enough to include it in my 10 designs, design 5 was difficult to create electronically due to how I couldn't find the correct font. Furthermore, designs 6 and 9 would require a lot of people ranging from Receptions through to Year 12's which may make it difficult to create due to having to find the correct people and instruct them on what to do. Some parents may not be accepting of their children being on the yearbook either as well. The designs that I am going to bring through to create electronically are designs 1, 2 and 4 due to how I think the handprint ideas are a good way to symbolise hard work and coming together as well as the images of past events in design 2 being a good way to reflect on the year which are what yearbook's are all about. |
TOP 3 DESIGNS:
The top 3 thumbnails were then created electronically and can be seen below.
Design 2 (the first row) is probably my least favourite as it didn't really work out how I initially imagined as it just seems to look way too busy rather than simple and creative. I really like the concept of the cut out front cover but the images (which were not my own) don't really fit into the cuts as well as I was hoping either. I wanted to put the quote on the back page because I thought it was relevant to looking back on the year through the yearbook but also because I wanted to simplify it and have a little less colour to reduce the overpowering appearance.
I also really liked the concept of design 1 (next in line) due to how the handprints add that personal effect as they are from students attending the college and they portray the hard work ethic and teamwork of the school values. However, I feel like the font of the "16" sort of ruins the design in a way because it seems too thin and rigid but the rounder fonts just didn't seem to fit right.
Design 4 is my favourite of the three which is why I have chosen it to be my final product. Again with the handprints, it makes it personal and relatable but I think it looks better as a pattern rather than just the three smack bang in the middle of design 1 because there are more places to look and the page doesn't look so empty. The grey gradient in the background also helps with this but I think the soul reason is that the page is busy enough but not too powerful with colour. The "16" is relevant to the year and its bordering worked out to be a lot more successful than the previous design.

FINAL PRODUCT:
REFLECTION:
I found this assignment a good way to end the year due to how it seemed to be a bit more relaxing and personalised than the previous ones as most of the work done was with the use of Photoshop so there was no stress on taking certain photos by a certain time. I think of the freedom of this task as both a positive and a negative concept due to how we had the option to choose to focus on whatever we wanted for this design in order to make it personalised and creative but it took me a long time to find the motivation to make my mind up on the ideas I wanted to bring forward due to how there was not explicit instructions or real boundaries. Luckily, the time frame that we had to do this task in allowed a bit more lenience than the folio task for example but even though it took me a while to decide what I wanted to create, I never felt under pressure to meet the deadline. I learnt a few new Photoshop skills within this assignment so they will come in handy when I may be making posters or marketing campaigns in the future and possibly even next year for a year 12 assignment. I would have liked to include some of the special effects such as the explosion tool a little more but I couldn’t really work that around my ideas without it being similar to other student’s designs.
